WHAT IS MEDICARE?
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for:
- People who are 65 or older
- Certain younger people with disabilities
- People with end-stage renal disease (Permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD)
The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services:
Medicare Part | Type of Coverage | Description of Coverage |
---|---|---|
Medicare Part A (Original Medicare) | Hospital Insurance | Helps cover inpatient hospital stays, care in skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care |
Medicare Part B (Original Medicare) | Medical Insurance | Helps cover certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies and preventative services |
Medigap Plan | Medicare Supplement | Insurance offered by private insurance companies designed to fill in the "gaps" in coverage left by Original Medicare (Parts A and B) like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. |
Medicare Part C | Medicare Advantage Plan | An "all in one" alternative to Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private insurance companies contracted with Medicare to cover all of your Medicare Part A and B benefits, and often included additional benefits not included under Parts A and B, such as Part D Drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans are structured differently than Original Medicare and may be HMO's, PPO's, or Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS). If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Medicare services are paid for by your Medicare Advantage Plan, not Original Medicare. |
Medicare Part D | Prescription Drug Coverage | Private insurance companies approved by Medicare, to help cover the cost of prescription drugs. |
